When Exercise Is Not Enough

The Questions to Ask

When I have a client come to me with a persistent issue, I first ask about movement/exercise routines. Usually, I find that they are lacking in that area which is my first piece of homework for them.

I have one client who has successfully started a home business, has a newly renovated home on 5 acres in Cochrane, Alberta, and vacations regularly with his amazing wife … and claims to be in a moderate depression for the last 10 years. My first thought is that he misplaced his passion, but let’s say he’s experiencing some depression. After reading the initial assessment, I see that he does not exercise regularly – he knows he needs too but says he’s lazy.

Whatever is going on, he needs to move his body in a conscious way for at least 30 minutes 5x/week (Medical recommendations are 300min/week but we’ll ease into it). The good news is that he is now doing 20-30 min/day of my recommended exercises and is better but still feels anxious, nervous and lazy. Come night time he describes himself as despondent, unfulfilled and having feelings of hopelessness.

Now the Life Coach comes out in me and I ask – when do you feel satisfaction? What gets you fired up? What really ticks you off? What are some of your core values? If you could do anything, what would it be?  What 3 questions do you often ask yourself? What does success mean to you?

Absolutely, you need to exercise and move the energy in your body – stuck energy will create illness and dysfunction.  But once energy is moving and more of the body becomes aware and attuned to the rhythms of its being-ness, the body will start asking bigger questions like … how do I accept myself and those around me? Why am I here? How can I help? Is this it? I want more – what is my potential?

This is when life for you begins. When we start asking the bigger questions, it is a sign that you are ready for the next step in your life, which is exciting! Life is such an incredible experience that doesn’t want you to miss out, but at the same time it is patient and relentless. Life will wait for YOU and won’t let you conquer that mountain until you’ve embraced its lesson so that you are equipped for the next mountain.
Exercise gets you to base camp and life coaching can help you up and over that mountain.
